Rapid City Police and Firefighters responded to reports of a possible drowning at the Best Western Ramkota Hotel Monday night.

Around 8:12 p.m., two young boys pulled a 5-year-old girl out of the water after noticing she was face down in the water for too long. Rick Volk of Phoenix, Arizona with the help of a nurse, performed CPR and revived the girl while authorities arrived on scene.

The girl was not breathing when pulled out of the water, and the bystanders told authorities the girl’s lungs sounded flooded in addition to her fading in and out of consciousness. That girl was sent to Rapid City Regional Hospital to be evaluated and is expected to be fine.

The boys who pulled the girl out of the water are identified as Wisdom Bass-Robinson, 12, and Btin Spears, 13, of Walt Hill, Nebraska. Bass-Robinson said, “We knew something was wrong when her face was in the water for so long. I grabbed her and Btin and I pulled her to the side.”

Rapid City Police Sergeant Wayne Asscherick presented gift cards for free Papa Johns Pizza to the three heroes. Asscherick said, “It was the least we could do for these three. They worked as a team with the boys being aware of others and Mr. Volk being versed in CPR that saved the life of the five-year-old girl.”
