A very striking image to see in the wolf is a beautiful black coat offsetting the deep, soulful yellow eyes.
The black wolf tends to stand out clearly in a pack of gray wolves. This coat color is well entrenched only in North America as there are no black wolves in Europe or Asia (with the exception of a small group of Italian wolves recently hybridized).
Where Did Black Wolves Come From?
Black wolves appeared the time when domestic dogs interbred with grey wolves in prehistoric times. These wolves were probably the companions of the earliest Native Americans.
Black wolves live mostly in North America, so this interbreeding must not have occurred much anywhere else.

Stunningly beautiful!! My jaw dropped to see such beauty. Thank you!
Wolves has always & will always be my most beloved animal ever since i was kid. Though we don't have them here in my country. I've made a pledge to protect them by educating my pinners via Pinterest. I do hope wolves can roam freely without any interference from the humans greed.
Beautiful wolves. Thank you for sharing. ~Gail~
Great shots. This was written in the 1930s, a timeless description of a great black wolf and his life in the wilds of Alberta Canada.

Beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.
Such beautiful images - breathtaking. I often wondered how some wolves came to be black.
I love the vid above of the wolf running towards the camera! I'd be on my knees with outstretched arms, ready for wolfy kisses <3 Years ago, I got to foster a black wolf for a few days. I was told that he was a wolf dog, and his behaviors were dog...NOT! Luckily, I had a wolfdog, so I understood him; his behaviors were classic wolf. I was totally in love with him! He liked to have his belly rubbed, and would growl while I was doing it...I figured out that it was actually like a cat purring. How adorable is that???
Absolutely wonderful photos , thank you for sharing....
A couple of these photos and the last video of the black wolf howling are Romeo, the friendly wolf who befriended dogs and people at the Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau from 2003 - 2009. The video is one of the few I have heard of Romeo howling.
A couple of these wolves remind me of Motomo, my black wolf of the Sawtooth Pack. How I miss him and hope he's doing well. Love you Moto
Beautiful !
Wolves look beautiful in ANY color, but the black ones here are particularly majestic looking. Time and again I ask myself "what kind of a human would want to hunt and kill an animal like this"? I know the answer, but will not say it here. Thanks for the photos!
Romeo <3
I had a dog that I brought home from the SPCA, he had a marvelous life here for 12 years. Looked like a beautiful black wolf, I will always miss him. Thank you for these glorious pictures, its like seeing my baby again.
So beautiful. Thank you.
Spectacular!!!
Absolutely beautiful. I've always liked black German shepherds, and these wolves are why.
All the animals move me...and these touch my heart. I love them, these pics are really beautiful. How is it that countries and governments allow to hunt them? Thanks for these pics...I wrote to some US reserves, i offered to go and work as a volounteer, for free, to see the woves... They never answer...but I still hope
Black wolves are stunning! Photo credit for wolf #30 goes to Shari Jardina www.wolfmountainimages.com @wolfmtnimages
