A large Utah oil spill was partially contained thanks to the work of a pack of beavers.
OGDEN, Utah – A pair of young beavers credited for helping keep an oil spill out of Willard Bay are now recovering in the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Ogden.
A Chevron fuel spill was discovered near Willard Bay on Monday afternoon and crews spent the better part of Monday and Tuesday working to repair the broken 8-inch pipeline that caused the spill and the fuel that had spread through the area.
Cleanup crews say a beaver dam helped stop the fuel from reaching Willard Bay, but a pair of beavers were covered in the fuel and sent to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Ogden for cleanup and recovery.
Employees at the center spent six hours bathing the two beavers, washing them twice with Dawn dish detergent. The pair were put on medication to help recover.
The beavers were reported doing a little better on Wednesday. One of the two is still lethargic, nauseated and didn’t have much of an appetite. The second has started moving around and has started eating a bit.
Rehabilitators say they’re taking the recovery one day at a time and hoping to prevent further damage, including neurological damage.
“They can absorb the substance through their skin. They face things like liver issues, it burns their eyes, respiratory issues, digestive issues, so whenever you get that it’s a little bit frightening,” said Dalyn Erickson with the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Northern Utah.
The beavers are just under a year old, and crews are hoping they’ll eventually be nursed back to health and returned to the wild.

Way to go beavers! Maybe if we had more renewable energy sources being utilized these poor guys wouldn't have to go through this.
And yet the powers that be want to run more pipelines..guaranteed to never break it spill they say. At least this oil company is helping to cleanup and rehabilitate somewhat.
This should not be happening!!!! Baby beavers helping keep the spill from killing more and running the habitiat. Maybe the parents were dead from being in the oil sludge tar!! There is mother nature and her family of eatths creatures trying to clean up after what 2 leggeds did!!
May I add, that Idle no more is aware of this comming on down the line and that is the goal of idle no more to stop the pipelines that carry this sludge through pipes that can spring leaks and have had leakes where is there a place to put this type of mess?????? not really anywhere wher people and all of nature live!!
The good old symbol of Canada pulls through again! Way to go Beavers.
Slowly, slowly Mother Earth is dying because of all the indignities she has and is suffering by what we have done to her. Her innocent creatures suffer, the earth cries and we ignore it. Idle No More is just one voice, but they are getting louder and louder. It is time for the people of the planet to rise up and stop what they are doing, take a look around and put an end to their endless waste, their conspicuous consumption, the lies, the rape.
This in fact is a very very sad story. Yet again humans endanger wildlife. Breaks my heart.
Beavers might have caused the spill, by the information on that aspect. Did their dam back up and undercut the footings at a creek crossing? At least the kids survived. I'm doing my part by being too broke to buy much gas or oil now.
So sad, that our wildlife is exposed to this pollution.... I wonder what happened to the parents.
Wish you and the Beavers good fortune. Both are heroes. Thanks
This is fucking tragic. Fcuk the oil companies.
HOPE OUR LITTLE NATURE FRIENDS RECOVER...THEY ARE SO INNOCENT AND HARD WORKING!!
Remember these tiny heroes when it comes for their fur, please humane society.
Yes, let's have fewer pipelines and let Canada send their oil via tanker. Those never rupture!
I've been a beaver fan going all the way back to my days in junior high.
You'd rather more birds and bats get chomped up in those "Condor Cuisinarts" for wind power?
The earth is not dying. But the creatures on it are dying, the environment is dying & as a result, mankind will die. Mankind will annihilate itself & the earth will live on. Mother Nature will deal with the poison & return earth to another environment, happily, without us.
its good we have beavers left there alot smarter then the GOP they risk there own lives to save us
There are wind turbines that don't have that issue. Andyes out of the two turbines that kill birds are the lesser of two evils.
Maybe we should have sent in Beavers to the Gulf Oil Spill!!
The Earth will take care of its self. Man can not affect this Earth to the slightest degree. The Earth it self pollutes more than man. Yellowstone is the largest polluter in North America and more crude oil leaks naturally into the Pacific Ocean along the Pacific rim daily than the BP spill leaked into the Gulf of Mexico during that whole leak. The Earth has ways to clean the air and water. All of the natural resources are for man's use. This includes crude oil. God controls this Earth not man.
O my word!!!!! It's Bush's fault!!!!!!!
Guarantee everyone on here protesting has a car, or electricity in their home, or even a phone. You don't really care about nature if you can't give up all of these things, so stop being hypocritical. Also sad story.
Poor beavers have to endure such hardships at such an age. Where are the parents? These oil companies have no sympathy for the lives they endanger or end. They need stricter laws. It should have never happened.
You need a padded cell.
Holy hell is not like they did it on purpose their damn just happened not to have been torn out by the forest service yet. Guaranteed it was on the block to get removed. The earth will not die no matter how bad we treat her. Once we've polluted ourselves to death mother earth will roll over and start again. We are mere parasites that will eventually kill ourselves off.
aww poor babies...
you mean a "colony of beavers"? :)
hope the wee ones get well soon.
If you give an animal who's been poisoned Algin,it will absorb the toxins. It's the best thing for acute neurotoxicity.
the end of mankind will not come from some interstellar extraterrestrial object causing a sky filled cataclysm or even from the finger of God, as man made fiction has predicted for over a millennia ... no the end of mankind is already here and walks upon the earth upright on two feet and proclaims itself the most intelligent of beings
Oil spill be dammed!
the way corperations work today must end . the billions spents on bonuses to give there investors there 10 % return must end and so doesbuying up all the compitition
That is so sad...I hate those oil spills that are happening all over, and soon to happen in our back yard if we don't do something about it.
Wish they knew how to use homeopathy...it could save the beavers' lives...
awww poor little guys. Heroes for sure!
These post are so important to the world, hopefully it will change many minds to stop these pipelines that threaten our water supply all over he world.
Get better soon babies!
May GOD destroy All pipelines!
Wonderful, smart, helpful beavers! Hope they have a full recovery! I couldn't help but think that the synthetic fragrance in Dawn dish soap - which I believe is made from petroleum (most artificial fragrance is) - would have made me nauseous as well. Wish they could have found a natural, all non-toxic product (like Dr. Bronner's Soap or a Seventh Generation unscented dish soap) to use on these babies. They did really NOT need more exposure to the chemicals humans spread around so carelessly.
What no one ever mentions is that these guys have about a 20% chance of living. Back during the Valdez incident they did a report that showed that less than 20 % of the cleaned animals survived.
So BAD on the oil companies and BAD on the media making us think it is "fixable" when it is not.
Even Activist Beavers work harder to keep Planet Earth safe from pollution than do U.S. Congress Republicans! Write your Congresspersons to make known what you think about this oil spill!
Is there any update on how the beavers are doing?
Maybe the beavers were trying to make a living before the oil invaded their space that was set aside for them. These heroic creatures can't be replaced with money.
Sad thing is that even though they can be cleaned up and medicated, chances are that the toxins they got exposed to will likely kill them within the year :'( Just too much poison for their internal organs to handle.
Prayers for the beavers hope they recover fully and speedy.
God save the beavers and all wildlife
Tragic. These animals are innocent victims. Thank you to the people trying to help them survive. Who is caring for all of the other creatures, from the microorganisms to all of the animals, fish, amphibians, birds, etc., that come into contact with the oil and these waters?
