Peru has officially passed a law banning genetically modified ingredients anywhere within the country for the next ten years

In a massive blow to multinational agribiz corporations such as Monsanto, Bayer, and Dow, Peru has officially passed a law banning genetically modified ingredients anywhere within the country for a full decade before coming up for another review.

Peru’s Plenary Session of the Congress made the decision 3 years after the decree was written despite previous governmental pushes for GM legalization due largely to the pressure from farmers that together form the Parque de la Papa in Cusco, a farming community of 6,000 people that represent six communities.

They worry the introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) will compromise the native species of Peru, such as the giant white corn, purple corn and, of course, the famous species of Peruvian potatoes. Anibal Huerta, President of Peru’s Agrarian Commission, said the ban was needed to prevent the ”danger that can arise from the use of biotechnology.”

While the ban will curb the planting and importation of GMOs in the country, a test conducted by the Peruvian Association of Consumers and Users (ASPEC) at the time of the ban’s implementation found that 77 percent of supermarket products tested contained GM contaminants.

”Research by ASPEC confirms something that Peruvians knew all along: GM foods are on the shelves of our markets and wineries, and consumers buy them and take them into their homes to eat without knowing it. Nobody tells us, no one says anything, which involves a clear violation of our right to information,” Cáceres told Gestión. GMOs are so prevalent in the Americas that it is virtually impossible to truly and completely block them, whether through pollination or being sneaked in as processed foods.

“There is an increasing consensus among consumers that they want safe, local, organic fresh food and that they want the environment and wildlife to be protected,” wrote Walter Pengue from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina, in a recent statement concerning GMOs in South America. “South American countries must proceed with a broader evaluation of their original agricultural policies and practices using the precautionary principle.”

Note: This decree was signed into effect on April 15th 2011

GOOD for them!!! Now we must ask ourselves what do THEY know that WE don't?

GM crops save lives and feed the hungry.

  3. Anonymous says:

Yes, and indiscriminate use of antibiotics in farming increases yields... briefly... and with terrifying long-term collateral damage. I understand the feelings of those who passionately belief that GM will feed the world, but on a long term systems theoretical approach to the issues, possible solutions and risks it simply doesn't stack up. It isn't worth the risks we know about, never mind the ones we don't. I should say that I trained as a scientist and economist, and am coming at this from a robust and evidence-based perspective. Countries like Peru are leading the way in 'waking us up' from desperately reductionist narrow and commercially-driven approaches to agri-business that already cause untold damage.

GM crops only feed Mosanto and yes they're hungry!

  5. Anonymous says:

I am a scientist and I happen to know that GM crops save lives and feed the hungry. Without GM crops, millions of people would die world-wide - mostly in developing nations. The positive benefits of GM crops far outweigh their negative consequences. Opposition to GM crops is therefore immoral and unethical.

  6. Anonymous says:

Stop manipulating the hungry for natural resources and allow them to restore their soil and they can go back to feeding themselves. Bio-diversity is paramount.

    GO PERU!!!! Beat Multinational Capitalism!!!!!!

  8. Nina says:

While the arguement 'GM foods help feed the hungry' makes sense autonomously, the fact that corporations like Monsanto are running the whole scheme in order to make money and actually don't care whether it feeds the poor as long as it feeds their pockets first, makes the arguement defunct. Go watch a film called Bitter Seeds, about the mass suicides of farmers in India who's miracle seeds failed to live up to their promises and who became caught up in debt to Monsanto they couldn't see out of. If Monsanto and companies like it really cared about feeding the poor, they wouldn't engineer their seeds to not produce or be reliant on heavy chemicals. In fact they would be putting money into positive schemes that work with nature rather than playing God. Peru should be proud of itself, corporations don't care about people.

  9. Anonymous says:

I'm a real scientist and know that GM crops are bad, very bad.

  10. Above all of this is the right of everyone to control the means of feeding themselves; how soon will it be before it is impossible to keep seed from your own crops. It's already hard with the prevalence of infertile F1 hybrids. Once the corporations control all of the seed. we'll have to rely on them to feed us.

Are they keen to 'prevent millions from starving' or just to breed more customers?

How long before Peru becomes a 'rogue state'?

  11. Anonymous says:

When people use the letters "GM" do they mean "genetically modified" or General Mills? I want to be sure of what people are saying. I would like to avoid all genetically modified foods, if I can, for myself and my family.

What is so bad about GMO's? How does it differ from selective breeding / hybridizing except for the time frame? For example....I have a seed that is susceptible to a certain disease only if the membrane of the plant stalk is weak. I also have a genome map of said seed, and remove the gene that makes the membrane of the plant weak. The plant is now less likely to get the example disease. How is this bad?

They can take the chemical treatment of Round-up, when weeds around die, they survive.....but have been doused with Monsanto Round-Up far from organic and quite toxic (slow death). Monsanto is also trying to get control of the seeds by creation of GMO Round-Up ready seeds and the list goes on.....Do your research people! The Peruvians have it right. I spent some time in Peru last year. They are all about organic healthy fruits and veggies! We are fighting hard on the Big Island of Hawaii to keep Monsanto OUT...

Each of these has their own name * what about your patatoes - how many names do you know for "patatoe"?

GMO foods do not kill. They may contaminate other plants, which isn't a good thing, but they don't cause allergic reactions and they don't make other foods in edible. Many benefits can come from foods such as rice that are enriched with vitamins and from others that have been modified to grow stronger. I believe the location of the planting is important as to any risk involved with GMO plants.

  38. Todd says:

The argument that GM foods saves lives and feeds countries is bogus. And anyone that goes by "Anonymous" saying they are a scientist and advocate FOR GM foods is a troll. The real argument is we actually don't know the long term effects of GM crops, but so far some of short term effects to date that we know of, to both human and animal, are alarming and untrustworthy (as are the companies that advocate them). Also, you can add in the fact that they've been introduced into the food chain on a large scale without public consent, in the name of corporate profit and the desire for control of a basic necessity within a corporate elite.

I dont think this is as black and white as some would paint it. Although,
I do agree far stricter measures need to be enforced.
And maybe GM is not a good fit for private enterprise. maybe WHOrg or a new branch of it would be better placed and not motivated financially.

GM Foods might feed the hungry but it also kills them. Why not just have the hungry people go out and catch bugs and Eat out of the forest before the GMO's hit the bugs and forests? It would actually save their lives eating the bugs and forests before eating GMO's would. Our creator will always give the hungry a way to survive off the land without some chemical company destroying it. The chemical company's need to stop messing with our soil, seeds and nature. The chemical company's like Monsanto and Bayer etc, only care about profits. They don't care that they put poisons in our foods that kill us. why do you think there are so many people that eat GMO's dying of diseases left and right? Come on, pull your head out of you GMO Loving butt.

I'm really shocked to see some people's post here saying that "GMO foods will feed the world". The studies are in, and the information is in on that. Yes, people might get fed, but what is the point when the human body rejects the food, and it has very low nutritional levels? There are other health concerns as some of the GMO foods are actually toxic to some, but mostly children. The cotton seed isn't exactly food(just the oil), but cotton farmers in India had always fed the cotton seeds to their livestock. That is until the animals died.

  69. Anonymous says:

GM seeds once put into the ground are the intellectual property of monsato. This means they have the patent on that GM seed. This means that when the inevitable happens of the seeds cross pollinating with non GM seed in a near by field that theses seeds also become the property of monsato. In this scenario the farmers are not allowed to keep the seeds to use the following year because they are the property of monsato.
Wakr up you zombies and realise that this corporation who claims to feed the world with their wonderful ability to feed the worlds poor and starving are blood-sucking vampires who actually want to own the worlds food. WAKE UP!

You know what's really bad for your health? Starving. Malnutrition. That's a real problem that most of the world has had to deal with - that is, until GMO's improved crop yields so dramatically that even dirt poor third world peasants could afford wheat, rice, and corn. Compared to most of the world you're a rich motherfucker, so you can afford your picky eating habits. Why would you advocate using government guns to force everyone else to do the same? Why don't you just go point a gun in your neighbor's face and tell them they can only shop at Whole Foods? With a recent French study showing Monsanto corn causes massive tumors in rats the media is finally looking into just how evil Monsanto really is.

After a recent study conducted by French scientists revealed rats feed with Monsanto corn that is being sold in Walmart grew massive tumors, suffered internal organ damage and developed other ailments the some of the corporate media is finally giving Monstanto the long overdue news coverage it deserves.

In a blistering piece Activist Post asking just how evil is Monsanto posting a Young Turk’s clip on the same subject which notably features footage from a documentary on the firm’s evil.

This comes as Mother Jones has done looked into Monsanto’s sinister history which included being heavily involved in three now infamous toxic – PCB, DDT, and Agent Orange – which the firm used it muscle in the past to cover up the dangers of and continue to do so until a mountain of irrefutable evidence emerged that could no longer be spun.

Recalling how both politicians, legislators, regulators and the scientific community were bought and paid for with Monsanto’s dollars for many, many years to cover up the dangers of those toxins certainly does little to console those worried about the toxic effects of Monsanto’s flagship Round Up Herbicide and the Genetically Modified crops the company produces.

The Mother Jones details how Monsanto was on the brink of absolute failure after the PCB, DDT, and Agent Orange scandals only for Mitt Romney to step in and led the firm into re-branding itself by focusing its ‘bio-products’ such as the Round Up weed killer and its GMO products.

"Agricultural biotechnology will find a supporter occupying the White House next year, regardless of which candidate win the election in November"
    - Monsanto Inhouse Newsletter, 2000

A Monsanto official told the New York Times that the corporation should not have to take responsibility for the safety of its food products. "Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food," said Phil Angell, Monsanto's director of corporate communications. "Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA's job."

It would be nice to think the FDA can be trusted with these matters, but think again. Monsanto has succeeded in insuring that government regulatory agencies let Monsanto do as it wishes. Take a look:

Prior to being the Supreme Court Judge who put GW Bush in office,Clarence Thomas was Monsanto's lawyer.

The U.S. Secretary of Agriculture (Anne Veneman) was on the Board of Directors of Monsanto's Calgene Corporation.
The Secretary of Defense (Donald Rumsfeld) was on the Board of Directors of Monsanto's Searle pharmaceuticals.

The U.S. Secretary of Health, Tommy Thompson, received $50,000 in donations from Monsanto during his winning campaign for Wisconsin's governor.
The two congressmen receiving the most donations from Monsanto during the last election were Larry Combest (Chairman of the House Agricultural Committee) and Attorney General John Ashcroft. (Source: Dairy Education Board)

Monsanto On Verge of $40 Million GMO Bailout in Europe: Report
By Nicholas Tomasi On November 25, 2012 · Add Comment

The genetically modified food industry’s biggest player, Monsanto, is reportedly set to receive $40 million in U.S. dollars worth of financial support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development according to the website bankwatch.org.

The monetary assists/bailout will be offered for contracts made by the U.S. GMO giant with medium and large farmers and distributors in countries such as Bulgaria, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and Hungary. It was not clear in the article what impact GMO bans in places such as Hungary and Russia would have on the situation. The funds will go to companies that cannot pay for either seeds or the wide variety of agrochemicals sold by Monsanto that they had originally committed to buy but aren’t able to afford.

The news is not likely to be well received by the legions of GMO Freedom activists that currently populate Europe and other affected areas. Genetically modified organisms, aka GMOs, have been linked to various negative health effects including allergies and even organ damage and cancer. Russia banned American GMO imports following a French study showing massive tumors in lab rats that consumed the corn as well as Monsanto’s Roundup, its controversial, signature weed killing chemical that has also been linked to cancer.

Monsanto GMO Bailout in Europe A Sign of Things to Come?

The announcement is also the latest in a series of events and articles showing that Monsanto is seen as “too big to fail” by powerful government interests from the U.S. to Europe even as the movement for GMO freedom seems to grow by the day.

Wikileaks earlier revealed that United States diplomats essentially work for Monsanto to push their products and seeds around the world, a company that moved from producing Agent Orange during the Vietnam War to using their chemicals and other materials to take over the seed industry. President Barack
Obama has also appointed two former top Monsanto employees, Michael Taylor and Tom Vilsack, to high ranking food/safety positions in the U.S. government.

European activists are known to march by the thousands against GMOs, as they wish to keep their food supply free of the lab-created U.S. crops despite best attempts by the European Union and other bodies to usurp the wishes of the people. Recently, French protesters burned GM soy that had been imported as animal feed and Italian protesters burned experimental GMO trees.

The French cancer study woke up thousands of people to the likely dangers of GMO foods, but perhaps most alarming is how they are crowding out virtually all other types of crops and food in general.

The media often refuses to mention that GMOs cross contaminate all other crops nearby, ruining biodiversity and hurting organic and conventional farmers who receive higher prices for their crops if they’re certified to be non-GMO.
Many farmers have even been sued for patent infringement by Monsanto when the company’s “intellectual property” i.e. patented materials are found within their plants, materials they never wanted in the first place. The organic farmers have argued in several lawsuits that the burden to prevent cross contamination should be on Monsanto, especially since they are the ones responsible for all cross contamination in the first place.

Peru has it right, except that the article points out that lots of products already on store shelves already include GMO components.
In most of Europe, GMO's are either forbidden or strictly controlled. AND products must be labelled to show GMO content or not. AND stores that pledge not to sell GMO-containing products attract more customers than those who don't care.
The main difference between Europe and North America (USA + Canada), is that in Europe, laws are passed to protect the consumers/citizens against risks. In N. America, laws are passed (or prevented) based on a negotiation between corporations and FDA/lawmakers. This according to a great CBC documentary from a couple years ago which highlighted the much faster growth of allergies, asthma, and other environment-related diseases in N. America compared to Europe. Sorry I don't remember the name of the documentary.

Yeah, I'm from New Zealand and it's going on here. One thing I would like to point out is that monsato or one of those multi-nationals was trying to sue a small crop farmer in the US because his crops being so close to one of there GM crops, that wind had spread the GM seeds onto the small farmers land, they were trying to sue him because his crops had a percentage of their GM plants in it. Monsato's registered GM modified seeds belong strictly to Monsato, so they figured I guess that they couls sue him for that. I remember reading in Nexus many years before this about registered seed crops that are GM and this was their fear back then that it would lead to law suits and one day all seeds would be owned by this multi-national companies. I don't know what happened in that case or the details, but I think people all over the world should be aware of this.

I am just...shocked by all the people cheering for GMO products. We could easily feed the world without GMO crap if all the food waste and corruption were stopped. I can't believe anyone has been duped into believing Monsanto et al has the interest of anyone except their shareholders in mind. As someone else pointed out, they already have blood on their hands in India. And if you talk to midwives in countries where GMO soy is the staple food, you'll find they have the deaths of many babies on their hands too. GMO is NOT the same as real food. And all this fake concern for the poor. Have you asked them if they want food that's going to increase cancer (multiple studies), cause sterility in a couple generations (multiple studies) or kill what babies they do manage to conceive at birth because *something* in GMO's causes serious cord issues (actual experience in countries with high GMO consumption)?

  107. Ty says:

GMOs in corn are what led to government-subsidized farming, and farmers that produce thousands of acres of product, but who are almost broke. It's what pushes food industry to use a lot of one product, thus forcing farmers to grow only one product, thus preventing them from sowing anything else, which leads to depleted soil and eventually, a ruined farmer. After s/he's spent all their money on more chemical fertilizers, new equipment to do so, and bought his/her next bags of GMO seed, they have no money to live on.

It's a nice idea to think that GMOs will feed the world... truth be told, there's is more than plenty of food to feed the world without GMOs. What will actually feed the world is a lack of greed.

  108. Matt Chappel says:

A few people have tried to make the absolutely ridiculous argument that because of GMO crops, third world "poor people" can now afford food when they couldn't before.

This makes absolutely no sense when you consider that the absolute CHEAPEST way to feed oneself is to buy seeds and plant a garden yourself.

Many GMO seeds will produce ONE round of crops and then the subsequent seeds are useless.

Organic, natural food seeds on the other hand will produce food indefinitely.... Meaning, if you buy one organic packet of seeds, you can grow that crop FOREVER as long as the plants give off more seeds. Meanwhile, many of the GMO seeds are the "self-destructors", which means that every season, you'll have to buy MORE seeds.... which means spending more money, obviously.

Also, give me a break with the bull about Monsanto caring about poor people. This is the same corporation who has literally RUINED the lives of farmers all over the world by either suing them for having seed blow onto their field, or lying to them about the benefits of Monsanto seeds which have underdelivered in almost every case.

It's great to see that most people aren't buying the pro-GMO nonsense.

  109. Jose Mendez says:

Peru’s decision was based on our concern for protecting our gorgeous biodiversity. The ten year banning is until we have enough information on how, in our specific conditions, this GM crops could affect our native species.
Many people in developed countries, especially in the US, are concerned about how GM crops will affect people’s health. This is good, but how many of them are concerned about how much petroleum has to be burn only for turning on those billions of lights in Las Vegas, just because they look nice? Or why no one even considers to hang out their clothes to dry after laundry, like they do in Europe and anywhere else in the world, instead of using power hungry dryers? It is easy to blame on a few companies to affect our health and our future, but maybe the real problem for the future is in the whole system that is involved, including our lifestyle.

We don't need genetically modified, underqualified food- we have the natural resources to overfeed everyone on our rich planet with nutritious food through intelligent management and and careful cultivation- the world's resources have been abused, squandered, hoarded, and wasted and now someone is trying to come up with a fake, ultimately destructive alternative to what we had/could have in droves quite naturally! By the way, I live in a developed country and I have lived very conscientiously and naturally for many years, as do many of my friends, because it feels right (bicycle only, hang dry, secondhand only, recycle everything down to a staple, and much more than these examples...but we need more of the the masses to live conscientiously). The way to do that is to change what we VALUE as a society. We'll see...Right On.

Anyone that has a stock in the market of GM seed is of course going to think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. The truth is, the GM seeds are contaminating the world..The world won't starve if we can cultivate real food in uncontaminated soil, have good water and sunlight to grow real food..do the research..
The bottom line is if a plant can withstand tons of chemicals that have to get stronger every year due to weed resistance, that to me is a red flag, you don't need rocket science to get it. Do you want corn or soybean that could withstand a nuclear blast on your dinner plate, or do you prefer natural food where the DNA has not been altered. When we eat this so called food, our body does not know how to process it, so it can cause cell division that can lead to all kinds of disease.. Look at the increase in cancer and auto immune diseases, not to mention all the GI disease that exists. Animals have died from munching on genetically modified cotton, is that the cotton you want to sleep on at night. I would recommend watching the movie Genetic Roulette for a real eye opener..When GM animal feed has been in the barn, the mice won't even eat it, wh
at does that tell you. Farmers have several testimonies of how their animals have acted on the GM feed and how sterility became an issue. Ever wonder why there are so many infertility clinics now. I'm sure everyone knows someone with a fertility issue. They are finding pesticides in children's bone marrow that have leukemia.
Go Peruvians and Kenyons, sustainable organic farming is the way to go, someone just always wants to profit on quick ways to feed the world that are dangerous. If we ate more real food, there would be less diabetes, obesity etc..
Also no one should be using Roundup, it's not biodegradable, let's get that banned too!! We can slowly save the world, stop treating lawns with pesticides and herbicides, let mother nature live, save the bees, stop chemicals. You may not be sick today, but give it a few years, look up the cancer rates for men and woman..
Until it affects a family member directly people will not get it. God did not design the world to be genetically altered. He thinks it was fine the way it was, so do I. He will be the final judge.

GREEN REVOLUTION technology in the 1970s, touted by Westerners wanting to make a profit on the fertilizers and seeds poor farmers had to BUY in order to take advantage of the GR that promised to feed the world was a sham. the TRUTH is that if food was EQUALLY DISTRIBUTED amongst all humans, there would be enough, TODAY, WITHOUT GMO'S WITHOUT FERTILIZERS, SIMPLY AS IS. We don't need GMO seeds nor crops that will compromise the future of all sustainable harvest that happen to be down wind.

  119. Robert says:

All I have to say is that the person/people that claim that GMO is not dangerous for nature, animals and for us humans have absolutely no idea what their talking about or their paycheck comes from the GMO producers.

I have worked in the food science agri technology field for a few years and was doing some research partially funded by one of the big three doing nanotechnology research not going to say for which company but peoples health of life's are not on the agenda at all period. Maximize profits and ensure that plants are sterile is another thing they have worked on so that farmers cannot buffer up on seeds from current...also the pesticide DNA sequences that are spliced in, are not there only to kill of pests and weeds but its also there to make you sick in the long run...these big companies are also big shareholders in the medical industry.

Our research also showed that GMO is killing the Bee's so they killed our funding...they didn't want to hear that nor some other thins of our findings.

Also big yields from GMO crops leads to Soildepletion so you need more fertilizers that goes eventually spreads to ground water etc...some grounds get so bad they cant grow anything on it...see the pattern.

If all farms Grew organic with natural methods and made their own organic fertilizers, use crop rotation, mixing different plants in fields that benefit from each other. Then Soildepletion would be a thing of the passed and so would GMO Producers...their is a way all we need is political courage.

I like how all these "real scientists" are commenting on this this story without any references. A REAL scientist would never do that.

As for my opinion, GMOs have certainly helped a lot of people, especially thanks to Norman Bolraug's work - http://www.webcitation.org/6AjYLd0b9. But how have the Peruvian government defined GMOs? Does selectivly bred organisms count? They're GMOs and no-one complains about them. Cross breeding different crops so you get a plant with the desireable traits of both parent crops has been done for centuries, and now scientists are doing it molecularly (and using a wider pool of genes).

The other issue with GMOs, and I think this is something that is nothing to do with the inherent nature of GMOs, but they way they are treated, is rights. When a person/company develops a new strain of whatever that is disease-proof/high yeild/needs less water etc, they expect some return on the investment they put into making it (actually that seems to be true for anything we do in life). However, how they go about "expecting some return" is questionable. Monsanto's (and Bayer's/Dow's) business practices are by no means sound, but they seem to have no real regulation. This is what I think the UN really needs to get involved, establishing good and practical guidlines on how companies can sell thier GMOs in a fair manner to developed countries. Until we see that, we will see this knee-jerk reaction to banning things that could be really helpful to a country.

How many of you feed other families with the products you raise? The grain and livestock produced on our farm feeds over 250 families each year. We raise corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay for feeding 700-900 head of cattle each year. Why do I use GMO's? Because corn production requires good roots to make a healthy plant, healthy stalk to transmit the nutrients to the ear and utilize the water and sunlight available. I have had GMO hybrids produce over 70 bu per acre more than their non-GMO hybrid sister (now termed refuge corn) in the same field in side-by-side comparisons. Why, because the root worm larvae eat the roots away, even with the use of insecticides when we don't have enough rain to activate the chemicals used to control them. NO ROOTS = NO plant production!! 70 bu is roughly 35% of the yield of my better corn. If we produced, as a nation, 35% less grain... we would be clearing land at a phenominal pace to fill the void. All cattle grow on grass for a period of time after weaned from it's mother's milk. Corn is a grass... C4 type for those that care. Whether I feed my cattle green corn stalks and hay or the kernels of grain is my choice as too how quickly i want them to reach readiness for market. But, I am tired of hearing about grain being wasted on livestock. Protein is necessary for bodily function. Humans are omnivores... we have incisors for teeth.... going without meat in a diet for extended periods is not what the creator had in mind. The fact is, someone above said the feed grains used on livestock could be used to feed the people.... umm, that is a big misrepresentation. The corn i grow is used for animal feed, ethanol, possibly corn oil and corn starch.... but it is not used to make corn meal for human consumption... and it is not sweet corn that is canned, frozen or eaten fresh off the cob. There are different varieties of those products. If people didn't eat meat, the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables and grains that would be needed to replace the protein provided would greatly increase over their current production potential. Plus the inability to store many plant products for more than a week without processing. And, have you ever tried to freeze leafy greens like lettuce? The fact is, if anyone chooses to not eat meat, I do not take offense. But when they tell me that it is bad for my health, my blood starts to simmer, if they tell me livestock waste resources, it starts to boil, and when they say humans shouldn't eat meat.... I pray for their souls!

So, if organic food now costs 20-50% more than conventional to grow. All of the people with enough money to make the choice to buy perceived healthier food can.... but what about those that don't have the extra funds to pay for it? I have seen presentations on the net affect to yields and therefore to prices that will cause 500% price increases to food in an average year. Take a drought affected year like 2012 and make it 1000%. The tillable land area of the US would need to DOUBLE to make up the yield loss. And that is only to feed the current population on earth! I appreciate your confidence in our abilities to feed the masses, but the Good Lord gave us pests, diseases, and weeds to contend with, now he gave us the enlightened ideas of how to increase production despite them. We cannot go back to food production practices of the pre-1950's to feed 9 billion people. The organic food system, in my opinion, is a niche market for those that can afford it and want to belong to an elite group that can pay more for their food. I know people that produce for it, and they even have concerns about the honesty of the certification process and how there is NO TEST for most products to prove they are organic.... it is mostly hearsay of the production process. I like my apples to be free of worms, scab, beetles, and fungi. I like my sweet corn to be free of earworms, beetles, and fungi. I prefer my cattle to be treated for lice, worms, and fed a wholesome diet of grains and forage. I grow GMO's and I eat them, and without them half the world would starve!

Organic food in the United States doesn't have to meet the same safety requirements other foods must meet. Organic food can contain more insect parts and animal waste product (manure used for fertilizing) than other foods simply because they can't pass the same requirements other foods have. So while we are labling GMO foods we should also lable organic foods with a warning that special attention needs to be paid in cleaning the product before consuming.
Not that organic food isn't also genetically altered. There is no grain that hasn't been drastically altered from its wild state.

Amazing how many people here are convinced GM foods are safe even though very little research has been done on their safety. They must either be very ignorant or have a financial stake in GM.

Monsanto's paid shills > You painted yourselves into a corner trying to rationalize Monsanto's Cancer Causing Poisons.

People are supposed to be thankful to eat crap manufactured by the world's largest Pesticide Corporation, right?

    Here is another disgusting demonstration of Monsanto's criminal hypocrisy;

The firm running the canteen restaurant at Monsanto's pharmaceuticals factory at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, serves only Genetically Modified-Free Meals!!!

    I wonder why.

In a notice in the canteen, Sutcliffe Catering, owned by the Granada Group, said it had taken the decision "to remove, as far as practicable, GM soya and GM maize from all food products served in our restaurant."
"We have taken the above steps to ensure that you, the customer, can feel confident in the food we serve."

May I suggest that the hierarchy of Monsanto Corporation (and it's shills) be forced to lead by example by eating their own Genetically Modified Food products, and by force if necessary.

There is no longer any legitimate, scientific defense of growing GM crops for human consumption. The only people still clinging to the outmoded myth that "GMOs are safe" are scientific mercenaries with financial ties to Monsanto and the biotech industry.

    GMOs are an anti-human technology.

They threaten the continuation of life on our planet. They are a far worse threat than terrorism, or even the threat of nuclear war.

As a shocking new study has graphically shown, GMOs are the new thalidomide.

When rats eat GM corn, they develop horrifying tumors. Seventy percent of females die prematurely, and virtually all of them suffer severe organ damage from consuming GMO.

These are the scientific conclusions of the first truly "long-term" study ever conducted on GMO consumption in animals, and the findings are absolutely horrifying.

Wow, the only response that I seem to agree with here. We too are farmers, and don't see how the world thinks they will be fed unless they all go back to living on their own parcel of land and grow all their own food. This isn't 1927, or 1950.. the amount of farmers still producing food, for the rest of the world, continues to decrease. If it weren't for high yielding, better producing crops, where would these people expect to buy their cheerios, fruits and granola bars? I too believe Organic labeled food is a niche market. I'm all about 'doing it myself' - grow my own garden, raise my own beef, pork, chicken and eggs - but our crops are GMO and I'm perfectly ok with that. People have been eating GM crops for much longer then they think!

you trust them producing your food?
the funny thing is this corn has to be highly processed into things like high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup or is ground into meal as a filler. it is otherwise not edible. the gm soy is an estrogen mimicker. it disturbs female hormone production and it feminizes men making them grow breasts.
these gm crops, fed exclusively to rats cause a variety of problems in the first, second and third generation.
there are so many more intelligent and thoughtful ways to produce quality food. it is a shame that farming was economically marginalized so that the brightest and the best were encouraged to leave the farm and go off to college for a substandard education to compete with tens of thousands of college grads for crappier low paying jobs with disappearing benefits. you can really tell what kind of a farmer a farmer is by looking at their library. not continuing to learn and becoming a sheeple type person will allow the kind of thinking that lures a farmer into gmo production.
a study from germany of professionals in Berlin showed 1000 times the level of glyphosate in urine than is permissable. how much roundup do you suppose in the atmosphere after the dust bowl event in nebraska that blew out a swath of soil 500 miles wide by 1500 miles long moving enough of this contaminated soil to dig the panama canal?
people, the fda has been corrupt from the start. they are just a whore for the corporate state.in 1907 William C Wiley fought the chemical companies in an attempt to assure a safe supply of organic food for america . he lost in court. we lost in the long run. how do we find our way back home? how do we rout out the fascists? a revolution of ideas and anthropocentric love will do. we need to stop worshipping the corporate mantra of profit before people, before environment, before everything and take our country back. sstorch

This whole concept that GMOs will feed the hungry is just propaganda put out by the biotech industry. The simple fact is that GMO crop yields are not greater than, and are often less than, conventional or organic crop yields. Increasing yields is not the point of GMO crops. The purpose is two-fold: first, to cause an increase in pesticide use (why do you think they're called "roundup ready?"), and second to gain control of the food supply. The courts have ruled that if GMO plants are found on your farm, doesn't matter how they got there (via windblown pollen for example) YOU ARE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE TO MONSANTO. The whole feed the hungry business is just a diversion to be used until there are GMOs everywhere.
