Celebrating The "Dog"
Today is National Dog Day! Dogs have been known as “man’s best friend” for years, and these furry little guys are family to many dog lovers all over the world. Dogs are not just faithful companions to us, they keep us safe from strangers and danger, are great playmates for kids, and love us unconditionally.
Some doctors and scientists say that owning a dog can reduce stress for families, and can bring well needed companionship to single folks and the elderly.
National Dog Day was created by animal advocate Colleen Paige and has been designated to bring attention to all dogs whether in need or not.
Founded in 2004, Paige wanted to give dogs a day to "show deep appreciation for our long connection to each other - for their endearing patience, unquestioning loyalty, for their work, their capacity for love and their ability to impact our lives everyday in the most miraculous ways. National Dog Day wishes to encourage dog ownership of all breeds, mixed and pure - and embraces the opportunity for all dogs to live a happy, safe and ”abuse-free life”.
Some great ways to celebrate National Dog Day are adopting a dog, donate blankets or toys to a local shelter, or treat your dog to a new toy. Check out the official National Dog Day website for more ideas and tips to celebrate your dog today. (Source)
