The symbol of the bear has always held a strong and sacred connection to many Native American cultures and this was often passed down through their stories. Many Natives are opposed to the bear hunts being held in Nevada because of this reason. Activist groups like nobearhuntnv.org, along with a group of Native Americans from the Paiute, Washoe and Shoshone tribes have spoken out strongly against the hunts.
Recently tensions mounted even higher in Nevada over the state's second proposed black bear hunt this year. The first black bear hunt just ended on December 31 and already there is talk and planning of a second bear hunt for the new year. While the state of Nevada works towards its annual bear hunt, another meeting on March 24 saw a 6-3 vote to ban the black bear hunt on the Nevada side of the Lake Tahoe Basin. In western Nevada however bear hunting would still be allowed.
To add injury to insult, durning one meeting, a group of Natives were offended by comments made by Rex Flowers, Washoe County wildlife advisory board chairman. Flowers, told the tribal representatives he didn’t want to “hear of bows and arrows” because his panel was focused on the bear hunt. Opponents of the hunt were calling Governor Brian Sandoval’s office complaining about Flowers’ comment. Rex Flowers phoned Randal Massaro, spokesman for Union Members for the Preservation of Wildlife, last week to apologize for his thoughtless remark.
Another very important reason to the opposition to Nevada's bears hunt is that the state continues to maintain one of the lowest Black Bear populations in the West. Despite this fact, State officials are still considering to continue the hunting of this precious species. Please take a minute to sign the petition below calling for a stop to the bear hunts in Nevada.

PETITION Stop the Nevada 2012 Bear Hunt
I JUST LOVE BLACK BEARS ,WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD, WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE TO HUNT AND KILL , IT IS SO WRONG, GOD DID NOT WANT THIS, SO WHY DO WE PUT UP WITH IT. PLEASE GET A LIFE WE ARE ALL HERE ONLY A SHORT TIME IN THIS LIFE SO LIVE IT IN PEACE.
To kill a creature as 'sport' is a sure sign of total decadence. Bears are such wonderful creatures that only someone morally bankrupt could possibly want to shoot one for 'pleasure'. What a sick creature Western man is becoming. Shame.
spirit of the bear
i am the spirit of the bear
and i am in such prolonged,
deep pain
some humans out there
think we bears are here
to entertain
to dance in the circus
to be baited and tormented
or our parts used for medicine
by those humans, demented
we belong to the forests,
to the mountains and streams
this is supposed to be our reality
not just in our dreams
The NDOW site is full of dead wildlife pictures. How sad.
The Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners approved this hunt in a corrupt, anti-democratic process that violated Nevada's open meet law, they continue to refuse to provide supporting documents in violation of the Public Records Act (Nevada's version of the Freedom of Information Act) and otherwise refuse to conduct the Public's business in Public. Not only should we overturn this terrible decision, we should disband the Board and reorganize the Dept of Wildlife. Corrupt, incompetence leadership should not be tolerated!
Laws were in place in 2006, which have not been produced by Mr flowers. They have diverted funds from our wet lands, and wildlife Bears, wild Mustangs, Wolves you name it they are nothing but killers, they abuse, slaughter, inflict so much pain and sorrow.
Does not a wild & free animal have eyes, heart, sole, does it not bleed when hurt, feel pain. Does it not have feelings, of love, compassion, sadness. They cry, love, and feel as we do. So why why can you inflict such pain and sorrow on them. Would you do this to your loved ones? How did so many become thugs, theifs, Immoraliy bankrupt. All you officials should not hold your seats, you should be zoned right out of the state, then earth. Bows and Arrows I'd like to give you an arrow!!! Get a clue you are the lowest form of a person and are not wanted nor needed.
I'm Barbaralynn Russell, and wrote the above-mentioned and I will let my voice be loud and strong. Get out while you still can. You are a disgrace to our environment.
Hear me, four quarters of the world-- a relative I am! Give me the strength to walk the soft earth. Give me the eyes to see and the strength to understand, that I may be like you. With your power only can I face the winds. Great Spirit...all over the earth the faces of living things are all alike. With tenderness have these come up out of the ground. Look upon these faces of children without number and with children in their arms, that they may face the winds and walk the good road to the day of quiet. This is my prayer' hear me!
