Over 80% of all Americans oppose the slaughter of U.S. horses for human consumption. This survey represents Americans in all parts of the country, regardless of their gender, political affiliation, whether they live in an urban or rural area, or whether they own horses or not. The survey was sponsored by the ASPCA and conducted by Lake Research Partners.

Despite this fact, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar recently appointed Callie Hendrickson to the BLM National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board to represent the General Public. Callie Hendrickson is the Executive Director of the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts representing ranching interests, many of whom have permits to run livestock on public lands in northwestern Colorado. She supports the sale without limitation of all unadopted wild horses to the highest bidder (including slaughter buyers). She will also speak at the second pro-slaughter conference (Summit of the Horse) in Oklahoma City this spring. (Sue Wallis’ creation).

So exactly how is it that Callie Hendrickson is a good representative of the public? Maybe not of the public but certainly a good representative of Interior Sec. Ken Salazar who is from 5 generations of ranching interests. This type of chronisim cannot be allowed to continue in our country at the detriment of our wild horses. Callie Hendrickson will join Jim Stephenson (appointed June 2011) on the Board. Stephenson openly advocates for horse slaughter. The nine-member BLM Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board recommends management strategies to the BLM and the BLM has discussed killing wild horses in holding since at least 2008. With Hendrickson and Stephenson on the board, the BLM may have just the Board they want —which could recommend to BLM that they dispose of the wild horses in holding.

TAKE ACTION!
Please contact Secretary Salazar and let him know that you do not approve of this appointment and that Callie Hendrickson does not represent your views concerning the wild horses.
