The Wolf Conservation Center is home to 25 wolves in New York state - mostly those of the gray wolf species. However in 2004 the WCC was accepted into the Species Survival Plan for the critically endangered red wolf (canis rufus). There are fewer than 300 red wolves in the world making it one of the rarest mammals in North America. The red wolf is a completely different species from the gray wolf and is not related. The WCC is home to six red wolves.
The red wolves on exhibit are very elusive but now thanks to the red wolf WOLFCAM everyone can observe the natural behavior of the red wolf family of four. However Between January and May, only two of the wolves will be visible, five-year-old M1483 and his mate, six-year-old F1397. The other two red wolves who are the offspring of the breeding pair have been removed from the enclosure so that the breeding pair will not be disturbed during the breeding season. Last year WOLFCAM watchers witnessed some very romantic behavior between the breeding couple. Enjoy watching and check back often during daylight hours, EST.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service is restoring red wolves to a portion of their traditional range in the southeast United States. Prior to reintroduction the red wolf was extinct in the wild. Two of our resident red wolves occupy one of the enclosures in the WCC Endangered Species Facility. These enclosures are private and secluded, and the wolves are not on exhibit for the public. The WCC’s second red wolf pair is on exhibit in the Red Wolf Exhibit which opened in October of 2009. For the first time ever visitors to the WCC are given the opportunity to see this rare an elusive species. (Source)
