The Polar Bear is one of the most beautiful animals in the world. Their global population estimate is now currently somewhere between 22,000 and 25,000 left. These numbers are now low enough to classify polar bears as a threatened species. Many factors threaten them such as global warming and pollution of high levels of chemical such as PCBs which they ingest by eating seals. But a very preventable factor, that of polar bear hunting can and must be stopped.
The main problem is that 60% of all the polar bears reside in Canada. The rest of the polar bear population lives in Alaska, Greenland, Norway and Russia. Currently Canada is the only nation in the world that allows polar bear hunting by non-natives and non-citizens. Canada also sells polar bear hunting licenses to trophy hunters which is shocking considering that they are a 'threatened' species.
Last year, Russia put a stop to their hunt but Canada, however, is still resisting pressure from conservationists to follow suit. The danger from over-hunting these animals now looms even greater because of the recent decision of the Nunavut territorial government (upper Canada) to increase this year’s quota on the polar bear hunt in one of it's defined hunting regions. In response to this recent decision, The Center for Biological Diversity, a U.S. conservation group, has filed a formal request with the Department of the Interior, calling for a ban on all Canadian wildlife product imports.
Many people in the U.S. and the world are not aware that polar bear hunting is still legally sanctioned in Canada. If in fact they were, there might have been previous actions to have forced the government tourism and game departments to eliminate it. There are actions that can be taken now though to help put a stop to these ecologically unsound hunting practices. They are as follows below.
